Welcome to “The Current”

Where science meets story—and youth lead the way.

Welcome aboard.

The Current is the storytelling arm of Cultivating Currents—a space where we share updates, field notes, youth perspectives, partner highlights, and reflections as we prepare for (and eventually launch) the Living Loop Lab Expedition.

This isn’t just a blog.

It’s a living stream of insight, data, and discovery flowing from the hands and minds of teens, educators, citizen scientists, and coastal communities connected by the waters of the Great Loop.

Why The Current?

Just like a water current, we’re in motion—pulling together young people, educators, scientists, and storytellers around a shared mission: to explore the connections from soil to sea, and to inspire environmental literacy through place-based learning and youth-powered research.

Whether we’re docked in a Gulf Coast marina, floating past a remote wetland in the Carolinas, or navigating the locks along the Erie Canal as we make our way into the Great Lakes, we’ll be sharing:

  • 💧 Field dispatches from teens and science mentors
  • 🧪 Behind-the-scenes looks at our sampling and citizen science kits
  • 🐚 Port-by-port highlights featuring partners, educators, and youth orgs
  • 📸 Snapshots of learning in action—on boats, shorelines, and community docks

What’s Coming

Over the next few months, we’ll be:

  • Running pilot tests with youth science kits
  • Partnering with microschools and homeschool organizations
  • Hosting small events and preparing for the big launch
  • Building out our vessel and crew training strategy

All of that will unfold here—in real time—so you can follow the current as it forms.

Come With Us

Whether you’re a curious teen, a coastal educator, a science nerd, a potential partner, or someone who simply cares about water, learning, and the future—we’re glad you’re here.
